I know it’s probably against Ranger policy to punch small children in the face, but at this point Diego might be tempted to make an exception.
In other news, Jessi has finally hit upon what we both think is the “right” color for Alyssa’s hair! I’ve gone back and corrected some of the older pages, so spend some time in the archives and check it out.
Today I tired a ‘drop shadow’ caption box, which I like a lot more than the full-color caption boxes. Mainly because they don’t overwhelm the reader, while still using a splash of color to identify who’s speaking. In case you weren’t aware yet, I’m becoming a bit of a lettering nerd.
Jessi did a great job of conveying just how awkward this dinner is becoming. I, on the other hand, still feel a bit green with the whole lettering thing. Hopefully it came out all right!
If you’ve never seen Harry and the Hendersons, I don’t know what more I can do for you. It’s quite possibly the best (also only) movie about a lovable Bigfoot adopted by a mid-80’s suburban white middle-class family with lessons about humanity to learn EVER.
The many family photos on the wall of the Galindo dining room were just to awesome to cover up with lettering, so this was my first attempt at bridging a lot of balloons together. Hopefully it came out all right!
Also, I still can’t get over the expressions in panel four. Pure. Gold.
ANYWAY. Come see Jessi and I this weekend during Alamo City Comic Con at table C35! We’ll have issue 1 for sale, along with posters, prints, and other goodies. This is our last con for the year, so if you want to get your hands on Musings merch before that holiday season, this is your last chance.
And let’s be honest, Musings would make a great stocking-stuffer.
Bit of inside scoop for you: I lettered this page. And I will be lettering all the pages from now on. So if you think I did a good job, or if you think it sucks, let me know and I will be happy or sad as needed.
I really love Jessi’s work on the three mystery ladies on this page. In only three tiny panels, she shows you what they’re about flawlessly.
I hope you guys are as excited about this issue as I am. Buckle up, because this issue has suits, cell phones, monsters, chase scenes, awkward dinners, and dads. You heard me right. DADS.
Sage Coffey and I met about a month ago, in a hotel bar during HeroesCon. While watching a dude get escorted out by three Firemen and an EMT, I got a chance to check out some of the samples she had with her. At first glance Sage’s work reminded me so much of Jessi’s own that I texted her immediately, claiming to have found her “Art Doppelganger”.
Since then I’ve had the chance to further explore Sage’s stuff, both by buying her awesome story Italian Crisis (which is like the Italian Job but with frozen treats) and checking out her Twitter and Tumblr. Her artwork is a wonderful blend of concise lines paired with exaggerated expressions, and I can’t wait to see what she comes up with next.
I mean just look at the piece she did for us. Look at it. Holy guacamole you guys. If I could do a Fear and Loathing story with Musings I would in a heartbeat. But until that promised day arrives, this will easily suffice.
See you next week,
To fill the short lull between issues one and two, we’ll be running some Musings related stuff drawn by people other than Jessi. Up first is our dear friend Jamie Kinosian! I met Jamie last year though Jessi, and we instantly bonded over a whole mess of awesome nerdy stuff. She’s an incredibly talented artist, and I urge you all to go check out her work. I mean just look at this…I don’t think we’ll ever truly pull off a Musings story in an established comic universe for fear of MASSIVE LEGAL DESTRUCTION, but just seeing Alyssa and M zooming through space with lantern rings is more than enough. Thanks, Jamie!
See you next week,
Well, that ends issue one of Musings! I hope you all enjoyed it. Jessi and I would absolutely LOVE to hear your thoughts on the comic so far, so don’t be shy about jumping in and commenting below! And once again, thanks so much for coming back every week and reading.
But stay tuned, because issue two is just around the corner.
Until next week,
Be sure to come see us this weekend at Comicpalooza in Houston! We’re at table 1538 in the Artist’s Alley.
